Fallout (Smell) Comparison:
Where other parts of my car cleaning antics might bore my wife to death – I can see her eyes glaze over as she does her best to seem interested, bless her – the fragrances of car care products is a safe subject to discuss with her.
My wife believes her incredibly sensitive sense of smell, to be a curse. When she gets a cold, she revels in the luxury of the loss of smell for a week or so.
In my attempt to trick her into a quick filming session and to take some photos for me, I asked her to do a ‘smell comparison’ of 2 fallout products. I have my reasons, bear with me….
In case you don’t know what ‘fallout’ is, in car detailing terms, here’s a little explanation:
Microscopic and jagged iron oxide particles from brake dust, factories and railway lines, embed into your car’s paintwork, wheels and plastics.
The chemicals needed to make up the product that will remove this fallout from your vehicle, need to be gentle enough so as not to damage the paintwork, but also strong enough to pull the iron away. Quite a balance for the chemists to work out, eh!
Once the iron fallout product is sprayed onto the areas where iron usually resides – wheels, wheel arches and the sides, bonnet and boot of the car - a chemical reaction occurs. And this reaction, without the right ingredient to balance out the smell, absolutely reeks. I’m not kidding, it truly stinks. It’s foul sulphur-like smell, whilst it’s doing its job and turning the iron a reddish purple, makes for a very unpleasant part of detailing a car, even for those of us with a less sensitive nose that my Mrs.
Usually, the only saving grace of this smelly part of the job, is the mesmerising, almost instant change of the colour of the applied liquid, from almost clear to a deep reddish purple as it literally falls away, dripping down the car, to the ground. Best example of this I’ve seen of this is on white vehicles.
An important note and word of warning here: DO NOT LET THE PRODUCT DRY ONTO THE CAR. It would be better to rinse off and repeat the process rather than leaving the product on longer, risking damage to your car. Also, thoroughly wash away the residue on the ground towards a drain.
A couple of tips for you:
1. Add a snow foam such as P&S Pearl Auto Shampoo or Aenso Polaris (on the subject of smells – this is a stunning cherry smell) on top of your fallout application to allow it to dwell for longer and to help lift the fallout product from the bodywork.
2. You could also top up the fallout to keep it wet or sprinkle on some water to ensure it doesn’t dry to the car exterior.
I digress. Back to the smell. I knew that if my wife got a whiff of the Auto Finesse Iron Out Contaminate Remover I wanted to test, she would be back indoors before I could say ‘it wasn’t me!’.
So, I went gentle with P&S Iron Buster. I had recently used this on a BMW I detailed recently and was pleasantly surprised (and relieved) that the smell was actually quite lovely! Sure, there was still the undertone of yuck, but the nice scent definitely balanced out the bad odour a lot and made the experience much more bearable. But what was the nice smell they’d added? I couldn’t place it.
Cue the wife. ‘What an odd combination! Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum and perm lotion!’
Yup. Nailed it. As always. The head-nose wins. Brilliant.

The 2nd product, Auto Finesse Iron Out Contaminate Remover – was applied and it wasn’t long at all before the Mrs was backing up, recoiling from the smell. The nose wrinkled and her free hand that wasn’t filming, shot up to pinch her nose. If I wasn’t so grossed out by the smell myself, I would have laughed at the wife’s predicted reaction, but I too backed right off after application. It honestly smells awful and when you’ve applied it all over the car and the wind is knocking back the odour in your direction, it makes for a very unpleasant task, and you’ll not be wanting to stick around for the pretty colour change.
However, in its favour, this 2nd product works noticeably quicker – perhaps half the time – with the colour change happening double time. And please understand, all iron fallout products smell bad. The smell can be masked but the undertone of ‘awful’ will still be there.
For me, personally, I‘m happy to trade a little longer ‘working time’, but equally great results for a more pleasant smelling experience. So, for me, P&S Iron Buster wins in this Iron Fallout comparison.
